Plug-in Electric Vehicles

Plug-in electric vehicles are racing onto the mainstream commercial market. The Chevy Volt , Nissan Leaf, Ford Focus, Fisker Karma and Tesla Roadster are the first of many to become available to consumers.

If you are considering purchasing an electric vehicle, you will need to know what type of charging equipment will be necessary to recharge the vehicle.

Charging Options

Level I, 120V

Depending on what type of battery the vehicle uses, a standard three-pronged 120V household outlet may be sufficient. Charging will take 8 to 14 hours depending on the type of vehicle.

Level II, 240V, 30 Amps

Some vehicles will be sold with a personal charging station which offers charging through a 240 volt, 30 amp dedicated circuit and will take 4 to 6 hours to charge depending on the type of vehicle. This equipment must be installed by a licensed certified electrician who can determine if your electric panel has sufficient capacity for this type of charging or if you will need to upgrade.
